“Combat Radiator Odour with Simple Cleaning Trick”

Must read

As the weather cools down and the heating is switched on after being unused during the summer, a common issue many face is the unpleasant odour emanating from radiators. Editor Sophie Law recently experienced this when she turned on her heating system for the first time in months.

Explaining the phenomenon, Sophie noted that the initial smell is due to dust and debris on the heating elements burning off, causing a temporary burning odour. To combat this, she recommended a thorough cleaning of the radiators to eliminate the smell.

Aside from removing the funky odour, keeping radiators clean can also enhance their energy efficiency. Dust and dirt act as insulators, hindering heat dispersion into the room. Therefore, a clean radiator requires less energy to warm the space, potentially leading to reduced energy bills.

Avoiding the need to purchase additional cleaning tools, Sophie shared a simple trick using a hair dryer to clean radiators effectively. By blowing hot air into the radiator from the bottom, dust and debris trapped between the fins are dislodged and collected on a damp cloth placed on top.

After cleaning all the radiators in her home using this method, Sophie noticed a significant improvement not only in the odour but also in the heat output of the radiators. Regular cleaning of radiators from dust can also be beneficial for individuals with asthma, eczema, or allergies like hay fever.
