A warning has been issued to all Aldi customers to be cautious and not fall prey to a new scam circulating on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Cybersecurity experts from Malwarebytes have noted a surge in deceptive posts offering discounted food boxes from Aldi in exchange for clicking a link, taking a survey, and entering a prize draw, enticing unsuspecting individuals.
Referred to as the “Aldi meat box” scam, this scheme preys on the financial strains many face, making the seemingly attractive offers very appealing to those seeking to save money. An example highlighted by Malwarebytes involved a post claiming that individuals over 40 could purchase a meat box from Aldi for less than $10, drawing attention through a family member’s supposed insider knowledge.
Individuals who engage with these links are directed to fake websites where they are prompted to disclose personal and financial details, including payment card information, names, and addresses. This data can then be exploited by malicious actors for fraudulent activities or unauthorized transactions. While the scam has predominantly targeted individuals in Australia and the Netherlands, shoppers in the UK are also being advised to exercise caution.
Malwarebytes suggests approaching deals that appear too good to be true with skepticism, especially those offering premium products at unusually low prices linked to well-known brands. The company also warns against narratives that rely on personal anecdotes, like claims of connections to Aldi, which scammers often use to build false trust.
Another red flag is the imposition of age restrictions, with scammers targeting individuals over 40 to create a sense of exclusivity and relevance. By instilling urgency and portraying the process as quick and risk-free, scammers aim to prompt impulsive actions from users. Malwarebytes advises individuals to treat social media posts promising premium items at significantly reduced prices as potential scams until proven otherwise.
Legitimate retailers typically promote genuine offers through official channels rather than through poorly constructed posts shared by anonymous or recently created social media accounts. Consumers are reminded never to disclose card details, full addresses, or phone numbers on websites accessed via unsolicited social media posts, particularly when the offer seems unusually generous.
