“Beware: Unofficial Phone Chargers Pose Shock and Fire Risks”

Must read

An urgent warning has been issued for Android and iPhone users regarding the dangers associated with using unofficial chargers. With many new devices being sold without chargers, consumers are often tempted to opt for cheaper alternatives available online. However, consumer watchdog Which? has raised concerns about the safety of these unofficial chargers.

Which? conducted tests on chargers purchased from various online marketplaces, including Amazon, AliExpress, B&Q Marketplace, Debenhams Marketplace, and eBay. The results were alarming, with nine chargers posing a risk of electric shock and eight being identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.

One counterfeit charger even mimicked an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter, complete with Apple branding on the packaging, but failed safety tests. The investigation also uncovered chargers without mandatory UK safety markings and devices with poorly designed internal circuitry that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions.

Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences of using poorly designed electrical products and called for stronger product safety laws and enforcement measures for online marketplaces.

In response to the concerns, Amazon and B&Q reiterated their commitment to customer safety. Amazon highlighted its partnership with Electrical Safety First to ensure safe charging practices and stated that all products on its platform must comply with regulations. B&Q assured that recalled items are not listed on its Marketplace platform.

Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from official retailers or reputable brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to avoid the safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. While these products may be more expensive, experts warn that the potential dangers outweigh the cost savings.
