“Giovanna and Tom Fletcher Guide Son’s Smartphone Use”

Must read

Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to give their 11-year-old son a phone as he gears up to begin secondary school in September.

Prior to handing over the device, the couple believed it was crucial to have discussions among themselves and with their son.

“The amount of content accessible is vast – it’s essential to consider how to handle that and ensure their safety,” expressed Giovanna, aged 40.

“This was something I’ve been apprehensive about being a part of my life. There are numerous statistics highlighting children encountering inappropriate content, in addition to concerns about mental health. That’s precisely why parents must engage in conversations with their children to empower them.”

Many children received smartphones for Christmas, prompting families to navigate the challenges and benefits associated with this technology.

Over the upcoming year, we are launching a campaign – The Family Chat – in collaboration with Tesco Mobile. The initiative aims to encourage families to discuss online devices, regardless of their children’s current stage.

We will highlight the available support and resources, including Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits and assistance for parents and children.

“This campaign is close to my heart as it helps me identify areas where our family can benefit,” mentioned Giovanna. “As parents, we often put pressure on ourselves to have all the answers, but Tesco Mobile’s resources and online hub simplify things for us.”

Giovanna and Tom, who is a member of McFly and a children’s author, have two other sons aged seven and nine. These children have tablets that allow them to message family members, play online games, and video call each other. “It serves as a means of communication, especially when Tom and I are away for work. Knowing that the kids can contact us at any time is crucial,” Giovanna explained.

“When our oldest son transitioned to high school, we wanted him to have a way to reach us. He uses one of our old smartphones, but we have implemented restrictions on its usage. Our intention was for him to view it as a functional tool, not a mere gadget to get lost in. There is no internet access, and it is linked to Tom’s phone, preventing him from downloading anything without permission.”

“Maintaining an open dialogue with him – explaining the measures we put in place and why – is paramount. Children comprehend better when they understand the rationale behind the rules,” she added.

Giovanna also recognizes that it’s not only children who might fall victim to excessive screen time.

“Phones are not allowed in the bedroom, we refrain from using them at the dining table, and whenever possible, we avoid being on our devices when the kids are present.

“Granting a child a phone with internet access equates to providing them access to the entire world. For us, it’s about introducing these privileges gradually, as the children demonstrate readiness.”

Here’s how to ensure your kids stay safe online…

1. Create a child account

When children receive a new device, setting up a child account facilitates easier management of parental controls, screen time, and app access. Adjustments can be made as they grow.

2. Verify the correct age

Ensure that your child’s actual age is registered on their account.
