“PIP Awards Extended to Ease Backlog & Increase Duration”

Must read

The duration of awards for individuals initiating a new application for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to alleviate the existing backlog. PIP stands as the primary disability benefit for individuals of working age in the UK, with eligibility hinging on the need for additional assistance in daily activities due to a health condition, disability, or mental health issue.

The qualification for PIP is not contingent on the specific condition but on its impact on one’s daily life. Presently, PIP awards typically last for as little as nine months. However, with upcoming adjustments slated to be implemented from April 2026, the minimum award duration for the majority of fresh PIP claimants aged 25 and above will extend to three years, potentially lengthening to five years upon subsequent review if entitlement persists.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) noted that this initiative aims to release health professionals for more in-person assessments and reevaluations. These operational modifications are distinct from the Timms Review, which will scrutinize the role of PIP, eligibility criteria for daily living and mobility components, and the assessment procedure.

PIP comprises two components – the daily living and mobility portions. The standard rate for daily living is £73.90 weekly, while the higher rate amounts to £110.40 weekly. For mobility, the standard rate is £29.20 per week, escalating to £77.05 weekly for the higher rate. It is crucial to inform the DWP promptly of any changes in health or condition.

Individuals deemed terminally ill usually receive PIP automatically without assessment. Under the special rules for terminal illness, a three-year award is granted before review. PIP is accessible for individuals aged over 16 but below the state pension age, with claims typically continuing upon reaching state pension age. Eligibility to file a new claim at state pension age is plausible if PIP entitlement was held within the preceding 12 months.
