Shabana Mahmood is preparing to unveil a significant overhaul of the immigration regulations in the UK, drawing inspiration from Denmark’s policies. The Home Secretary reportedly sent officials to Denmark last month to examine its stringent border control and asylum procedures, considered some of the most stringent in Europe.
Denmark’s emphasis on stricter regulations regarding family reunions and limiting certain refugees to temporary stays is under scrutiny. Their measures have led to a notable decrease in asylum applications to a four-decade low, along with a 95% success rate in deporting rejected asylum seekers.
There are differing opinions among Labour MPs regarding this move, with some backing tougher actions to counter Reform UK, while others fear it may push voters towards the Green Party and Liberal Democrats.
Shabana Mahmood aims to deter unauthorized entry into the UK while facilitating the removal of individuals with no legal right to stay. Reports suggest she is keen on meeting Denmark’s immigration minister, Rasmus Stoklund, at the earliest opportunity.
Rasmus Stoklund has previously likened Danish society to the peaceful and cooperative nature of the hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings.” He stressed the expectation for newcomers to engage positively, highlighting the importance of contribution and participation.
Gareth Snell, Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, expressed openness to exploring changes that bring fairness to an asylum system perceived as lacking trust by his constituents. He emphasized the value of adopting successful practices from sister parties worldwide in managing immigration effectively.
In contrast, Nadia Whittome, MP for Nottingham East and a member of the Socialist Campaign Group caucus, cautioned against replicating the Danish model, branding it as aligned with far-right ideologies.
Recent Home Office data revealed that 648 migrants arrived in the UK via the Channel on Friday, totaling 38,223 for the year thus far. Opt for Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News for convenient access to the latest news updates.
