“Tesco’s Tip: How to Keep Potatoes Fresh for Months”

Must read

Potatoes can sometimes surprise you by staying fresh longer than expected, but other times they can turn into an unsettling sight with strange growths taking over your kitchen. To prevent this, following a useful tip from supermarket chain Tesco could be the key to maintaining your potatoes’ freshness for an extended period.

Tesco has introduced a storage technique that claims to preserve potatoes for up to six months, keeping them as crisp as when you bought them. The recommendation from the retailer suggests avoiding the typical plastic bag that potatoes come in and instead opting for a paper or mesh bag.

For optimal preservation, it is advised to store the potatoes separately from other vegetables, especially onions, in a cool and dark environment, according to the Express.

Tesco explains that potatoes tend to sprout, shrivel, shrink, and soften a couple of weeks after purchase if stored incorrectly. By following their simple instructions, you can significantly prolong the lifespan of your potatoes.

To ensure proper air circulation, it is essential not to suffocate the potatoes in a plastic bag but instead keep them in a mesh or paper bag. Additionally, storing potatoes away from other fresh produce, especially onions, is crucial to prevent premature ripening caused by ethylene gas release.

Maintaining a cool and dark storage place below 10°C is vital as exposure to light can lead to sprouting due to photosynthesis. Tesco recommends placing the potatoes in a paper bag and storing them in a suitable dark location such as a porch cupboard, garden shed, or even in the fridge if space allows.

Before storing them, it is advised to “cure” the potatoes by avoiding washing them, as moisture can induce sprouting. Instead, remove dirt by brushing it off and place the potatoes on a sheet of newspaper in a dark area where they do not touch each other, allowing for air circulation between them for a couple of weeks.

Following this preparation process, transfer the potatoes to the chosen dark and cool storage spot for long-lasting freshness.
