Lorenzo Musetti has had a tense week but has successfully clinched a spot at the ATP Finals, a goal he was eager to achieve. The 23-year-old was on track to qualify for the season-ending tournament but was surpassed by Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Race to Turin after an early exit at the Paris Masters.
Heading to the ATP 250 event in Athens, Musetti knew that his fate was in his hands. Winning the tournament would secure his place at the ATP Finals, while anything less would see Auger-Aliassime claim the final spot.
Despite falling to Novak Djokovic in the final, Musetti’s qualification was confirmed as Djokovic later withdrew from the year-end Finals, granting Musetti the opportunity to compete. Following his narrow defeat in the Athens final, Musetti swiftly traveled to Turin for the ATP Finals, where he is set to face Taylor Fritz on Monday.
Expressing his joy on social media, the 23-year-old shared, “A dream that comes true.” Musetti also posted a picture with his team en route to Italy.
While aiming for his third career title at the Hellenic Championship, Musetti faced disappointment with another final loss. However, he was all smiles when Djokovic disclosed his withdrawal news post-match.
Acknowledging Djokovic’s decision to delay the announcement, Musetti supported the move, stating that Djokovic adhered to the tournament rules. Despite the loss in the final, Musetti remained positive and focused on his performance.
With Djokovic’s late withdrawal, the ATP had to quickly secure a replacement alternate, leading to Alexander Bublik becoming the first alternate. Casper Ruud, next in line after Bublik, stepped up as the second alternate, transitioning from a holiday mode to being ready for the tournament.
Both Bublik and Ruud, as alternates, stand to earn £118k without playing a match, with potential for increased fees if they are called upon to compete.
