Drivers are being advised to carefully inspect their tires for common issues that could lead to MOT failure. Falken Tyre experts have highlighted crucial tire aspects that should be routinely checked.
Andreas Giese, the chief corporate officer at Falken Tyre Europe, emphasized the significance of tires in road safety, being the sole car part in direct contact with the road. He pointed out that worn, improperly inflated, or damaged tires increase the risk of extended braking distances, reduced grip, and stability, particularly in wet or slippery conditions.
Giese cautioned that tire problems frequently cause MOT failures but suggested simple checks to perform before taking your car for its MOT to avoid surprises. Insufficient tire inflation can result in MOT failure, so motorists should regularly monitor tire pressures for optimal fuel efficiency, handling, and braking.
Maintaining proper tire inflation can prevent uneven tire wear, another factor leading to MOT failure. The legal tread depth limit is 1.6mm, easily checked using a gauge or a 20p coin inserted into the tread. If the coin’s outer rim is visible, the tread depth is below the legal limit, resulting in MOT failure.
Bulges or cuts on tire sidewalls indicating structural damage can lead to MOT test failure and should be promptly addressed by replacing the affected tires. Any damage exposing cords or ply on tire treads or shoulders will also result in MOT failure, necessitating immediate tire replacement.
Motorists should also be vigilant for sharp objects embedded in tires. Cars equipped with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) will undergo checks during MOT testing. It is essential to ensure the TPMS is functioning correctly, including all sensors.
Additionally, Giese mentioned other tire-related issues that could lead to MOT failure, such as using different-sized tires on the same axle or tires not meeting the required speed and load ratings for the vehicle.
