Hotel guests worldwide are facing eviction from their rooms following the bankruptcy of Sonder, a partner company of Marriott. The abrupt closure has left travelers stranded in various locations, including Boston and Dubai, with reports of belongings being hastily packed into plastic bags or left in hallways.
Marriott recently terminated its licensing agreement with Sonder, citing Sonder’s default as the reason. Consequently, Sonder is no longer affiliated with Marriott Bonvoy, and their properties are not available for new bookings through Marriott’s channels. Marriott is prioritizing support for current guests at Sonder properties and those with upcoming reservations. The hotel chain will be reaching out to guests who made direct bookings through Marriott channels to address their booking needs.
One guest, Patrick M D’Aoust, staying at a Sonder property in Montréal, Canada, shared his experience with CNN, stating that he received an email on Sunday instructing him to vacate his room by 9 am on Monday. When he requested a later checkout time, he was informed that the building needed to be emptied promptly.
Another guest, Katelyn Caralle, expressed her dismay at receiving less than 24 hours’ notice to leave the property due to the Marriott partnership termination. She questioned the situation for others who had already paid for their stays that were abruptly cut short.
