Nick Reiner, the individual accused of the tragic murder of his parents, renowned director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, has been blocked from accessing the $1.5-million US trust fund he intended to use for his legal defense. This denial comes after Reiner sought unpaid funds from a trust set up for him by his parents back in 1993.
Trustees, as per court documents obtained by CBC News, rejected Reiner’s appeal for the funds, citing the California “slayer statute,” which bars individuals who have committed a felonious and intentional act resulting in death from inheriting money or property. The Reiner couple was fatally stabbed in their California home on December 14, 2025, with their son Nick Reiner being arrested shortly after. The 32-year-old son is facing murder charges and has pleaded not guilty.
An indictment by a Los Angeles County grand jury unveiled that Reiner is accused of laying in wait before the attack on his parents, potentially facing the death penalty based on the circumstances. District Attorney Nathan Hochman has yet to decide on seeking this penalty. Reiner is anticipated to appear in court for a pretrial hearing in September, with public defender Kimberly Greene representing him.
The legal battle around the trust fund uncovers that Nick Reiner was entitled to half of his trust fund upon turning 30 and the remainder at 35. Allegedly, he never received the funds due at 30, leading to the petition claiming denial of his rightful access to the money. The trust fund holds assets valued at a minimum of $1.5 million US, as per the filing.
Private attorney Alan Jackson was initially on Reiner’s legal team but departed without explanation. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal expenses but later changed their stance. The trust fund overseers have halted distribution pending the resolution of the criminal case against Reiner, citing uncertainties around the “slayer statute” principles.
The case around Reiner remains shrouded in mystery, with authorities yet to disclose motives behind the tragic incident. Jake Reiner, in a public statement, expressed the ordeal following his parents’ murder and the focus on his brother’s alleged involvement. Rob Reiner’s illustrious career in Hollywood, known for iconic films like The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally, alongside his enduring marriage to Michele, adds layers of complexity to this tragic tale.
