“Revamping 24 Sussex Drive: Canada Seeks Team for Historic Makeover”

Must read

Canada is seeking a team to revamp the iconic 24 Sussex Drive, making it habitable for future prime ministers. The government has issued a procurement notice, inviting Canadian companies to compete for the project. The selected team will be tasked with transforming the historic residence into a modern and secure living and working space using Canadian materials and innovations.

The rehabilitation project aims to restore the dilapidated property, which has been vacant for over a decade due to successive prime ministers avoiding costly renovations. Prime Minister Mark Carney has labeled the state of the residence as embarrassing and has initiated plans to fund the restoration through a national design competition and fundraising campaign, which has already raised over $735,000.

The competition requirements include creating private living quarters for the prime minister and their family, accommodating workspaces, and restoring heritage elements. The winning team will also ensure universal accessibility and handle landscaping and security aspects. The project involves extensive assessments and modifications to meet safety standards.

The competition will be judged by experts, focusing on design concepts and construction plans. Competing teams must demonstrate experience in managing complex projects exceeding $50 million in cost. Furthermore, the competition mandates the involvement of Indigenous people and businesses in at least five percent of the project’s value.

The exact renovation costs are yet to be determined, with the construction budget to be disclosed in the next phase of the procurement process. The goal is to create a revitalized 24 Sussex that reflects Canada’s heritage and meets modern needs. The Rideau Hall Foundation, overseeing the fundraising, plans to launch a formal campaign in the near future.
