A data breach has targeted Coldcard, a bitcoin-only hardware wallet, resulting in hackers siphoning over $100 million in bitcoin from Coldcard hard wallets, as per findings from Galaxy Research, a blockchain intelligence firm. Coldcard, developed by Coinkite based in Toronto, operates as a hardware wallet that enhances security by storing “seed phrases” offline within the physical device, offering an additional layer of protection for bitcoin users. The compromised software in Coldcard allowed cybercriminals to reconstruct wallet seed phrases, leading to multiple waves of attacks with 1,596 bitcoin stolen from around 7,300 addresses. Coinkite has issued firmware updates to address the vulnerability and advised affected users to transfer their funds promptly. Despite the ongoing investigation, the culprits behind the attacks remain unidentified. It is crucial for Coldcard users to take precautionary measures, such as installing the latest firmware update and transferring funds to a secure address, to mitigate the risks associated with the breach.
