A Winnipeg mother shared her experience of dealing with her son’s severe cashew and pistachio allergy. The incident occurred when her son, Simon, was just 18 months old. After consuming a cashew, his face quickly swelled, leading to an anaphylactic reaction that required urgent medical attention at the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department.
The mother, Morgan Klachefsky, described the initial shock and fear of realizing the life-threatening nature of her son’s allergies. Determined to protect Simon, she embarked on a journey of education and preparedness, attending classes on anaphylactic allergies management with her husband, Job.
As Simon grew older, his mother struggled with relinquishing control over his safety, feeling overwhelmed by fear and anxiety. However, Simon’s bravery and zest for life inspired her to address her mental health and trust others with his care.
Through gradual steps and increased trust in others, Morgan learned to let go of her fears and allow Simon more independence. She empowered him with knowledge about his allergies, teaching him to read labels and administer his EpiPen. Simon’s growing confidence and awareness enabled him to enjoy new experiences, like attending sleepaway camp with friends, under careful supervision.
Despite the challenges and anxieties, Morgan emphasized the importance of facing fears, seeking support, and fostering independence in her son. By sharing her story, she hoped to inspire others facing similar struggles to navigate the complexities of raising a child with severe allergies.
