A British detection dog assisting in the prevention of Channel smuggling activities has played a crucial role in the confiscation of 76 illegal boats, marking the largest operation of its kind. Named Adele, the sniffer dog has been stationed at the Bulgaria-Turkey border, where she successfully detects contraband that trafficking groups attempt to smuggle into Europe. Trained by the National Crime Agency, Adele specializes in identifying the rubber material used in people smugglers’ dinghies hidden within trucks.
Collaborating with international partners, the NCA has seized a total of 76 vessels this year. In a recent intensified operation conducted in conjunction with the Home Office, HMRC, Foreign Office officials, and Bulgarian authorities, officers discovered several illegal migrants during searches of 350 freight and passenger vehicles at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint over a 48-hour period.
Can Gunal, an NCA international liaison officer, emphasized Adele’s critical role in combatting people smuggling networks operating at the Bulgarian border. Adele’s capabilities extend beyond detecting smuggling equipment, as she has also identified other illegal items and illicit cash.
Julie Roper, leading the NCA operation, highlighted the significance of intercepting boats, emphasizing that each seizure prevents dangerous crossings and potentially saves lives. Notorious gang leader Hewa Rahimpur, who orchestrated a large human trafficking network facilitating illegal crossings across the English Channel, was recently sentenced to 11 years in Belgium. Rahimpur, an Iranian Kurd, sought asylum in the UK in 2016, subsequently establishing a criminal enterprise using Britain as a hub for coordinating migrant transportation.
UK officers conducted forensic examinations on previously seized boats last week, contributing to intelligence-gathering efforts against organized crime groups like Rahimpur’s network. The operation also targeted various illegal activities, including drug trafficking, illegal tobacco trade, cash smuggling, and counterfeit goods distribution.
Bulgaria’s role as a critical gateway for criminal people smuggling networks necessitates close collaboration with international partners to combat cross-border crime effectively. Philip Nikolov of the Bulgarian Border Customs Police emphasized the crucial role of information exchange and coordinated actions in countering smuggling and ensuring security for Europe and the UK. The partnership’s success is evident in the tangible outcomes of saved lives, cleaner business environments, and a more secure society.
