“Buck Martinez to Enter Blue Jays Hall of Excellence”

Must read

The Toronto Blue Jays will honor Buck Martinez, a veteran broadcaster, by inducting him into the team’s new Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after announcing over 4,000 games, dedicated nearly four decades to the Blue Jays as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his surprise and gratitude, Martinez described the induction as a significant honor during an interview with CBC Radio’s “Metro Morning” on Friday. He credited the Jays fans for their warm reception over the years, making him feel like a part of their families.

Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez shared that his phrases evolved during his return to Toronto in 2010, influenced by his time in Milwaukee and inspired by legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker.

Reflecting on his transition into retirement, Martinez acknowledged the significant change after being involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite his intention to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, health reasons, including his battle with cancer for the second time in 2025 (initially diagnosed in 2022), led him to step back. He joyfully confirmed being cancer-free and in good health now.

The Hall of Excellence, situated on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will showcase an exhibit honoring key figures who have shaped the Blue Jays franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters. The current 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence will be included in this prestigious group.

Transitioning from feeling like an “exile” upon joining the Blue Jays in 1981 from the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers, Martinez shared his newfound appreciation for Toronto and its baseball-loving community. He highlighted the city’s passion for the game and the warm reception he received, calling it a destination worth cherishing.

Martinez also reminisced about the thrilling 2025 World Series, describing it as one of the best he had witnessed, particularly praising the chemistry and excitement of Game 7. Reflecting on the current season, he acknowledged the challenges faced by players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., emphasizing the game’s inherent difficulty even for the most talented athletes.
