Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild surprised the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid with a 4-3 victory in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts with a goal in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton doubling the lead 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton struck again just before the break, securing her brace and propelling the Wild to a lead they maintained. Jorian Baucom added another goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who saw their unbeaten streak of 10 matches come to an end. Despite controlling 54% of possession, Ottawa was outshot 16-13 (9-6 on target).
The Wild secured six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the score, and then netted a late winner five minutes into second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 triumph over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had put the fourth-placed Tides ahead with a goal in the 19th minute. Vancouver controlled 56% of possession and outshot Halifax 18-13, with a 6-4 advantage in shots on target.
The Tides earned four of the six corners in the game, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
