“Chancellor Reeves Maintains Tax Freeze Until 2030/31”

Must read

Chancellor Rachel Reeves presented the Spring Statement in the House of Commons today, but did she introduce any significant tax adjustments?

The personal tax thresholds are presently locked until the conclusion of the 2030/31 fiscal year. Originally slated to unfreeze in April 2028, the Chancellor extended this freeze by an additional three years in her Budget announcement last November.

Following this decision, the Office for Budget Responsibility predicted that the freeze would lead to an increase of 780,000 basic-rate, 920,000 higher-rate, and 4,000 additional-rate income tax payers in 2029/30.

In today’s Spring Statement, Rachel Reeves did not unveil any further alterations to the tax thresholds. Consequently, they are expected to remain frozen until the end of the 2030/31 tax year.

The personal allowance signifies the income threshold before tax obligations commence. Currently standing at £12,570, earnings exceeding this amount are subject to the basic 20% income tax rate.

Earnings surpassing £50,270 trigger the higher 40% rate, while income exceeding £125,140 incurs the additional 45% rate.

The threshold for commencing National Insurance contributions is also fixed at £12,570. When earnings reach this point, a rate of 8% is applied, with an additional 2% on income exceeding £50,270.
