China is currently showing aggressive behavior following signs of preparing for nuclear weapons testing, as per a defense expert’s warning. Recently obtained satellite images of the secretive Lop Nur military base, often referred to as “China’s Area 51,” indicate significant expansion efforts by the Chinese military amidst escalating tensions with Western nations. The images reveal the construction of boreholes, horizontal tunnels for nuclear device testing, an extended runway, and advanced fighter aircraft. Moreover, new access roads, support structures, and storage facilities for explosives have been developed since the last aerial survey in 2020.
Both former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have expressed intentions to resume nuclear weapons testing, prompting speculation that Chinese President Xi Jinping may be inclined to follow suit. Professor Anthony Glees, a security and defense expert at the University of Buckingham, stated that Xi might seek to replicate the actions of Putin and Trump in this regard.
Despite China possessing a smaller nuclear arsenal of 600 warheads compared to the US and Russia, the country’s efforts to expand the Malan Air Base and the Lop Nur facility suggest ambitions to narrow the gap. Professor Glees emphasized that these developments indicate China’s determination to catch up in nuclear capabilities.
The emergence of these satellite images has raised concerns among officials in Taiwan, especially following reports from US intelligence suggesting a potential Chinese attack on the island by 2027. China has reiterated its stance on seeking “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan. Professor Glees highlighted recent indications pointing towards President Xi adopting a more aggressive stance, particularly towards Taiwan, which faces increasing existential threats.
The satellite images depict the preparation of an extensive air force test site, including the construction of a three-mile-long runway for testing new supersonic stealth planes like the J-36 and J-50. These aircraft are designed for high speed, altitude, and radar invisibility, indicating an offensive rather than defensive role. The expert believes these developments signify China’s focus on utilizing hypersonic missiles and drones for targeted strikes, with Taiwan presumed as a potential target.
