Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies revealed on Wednesday that they are investigating high-ranking officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration. This development comes after the country’s former defence minister called for national elections amid the ongoing conflict with Russia’s invasion. The investigation, led by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, aims to uncover a criminal network allegedly involving current and former lawmakers, as well as senior officials from the president’s office.
President Zelenskyy, facing political turmoil, recently dismissed Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the president’s office but has not publicly commented on the investigation. This probe poses a new challenge to Zelenskyy’s leadership following previous controversies, including the resignation of his chief of staff Andriy Yermak due to a corruption inquiry.
In response to mounting pressure, Zelenskyy appointed Yevhenii Khmara as the new defence minister, following the dismissal of Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov, a key ally of Zelenskyy, recently called for elections in Ukraine, challenging the president’s stance amid martial law restrictions due to the ongoing conflict. Fedorov criticized the governance system in Ukraine, highlighting systemic issues undermining the country’s ability to combat corruption and effectively prosecute the war.
Despite recent military successes, including drone strikes on Russian oil facilities and disruptions to enemy advances, Ukraine still faces challenges in achieving lasting peace and securing adequate defense capabilities against Russian aggression. The conflict continues to escalate, with both sides engaging in military actions that have resulted in civilian casualties and increased tensions in the region.
