Dr Amir Khan suggests using a 5p zinc pill to combat cold symptoms and potentially shorten the illness duration based on supporting research. The renowned NHS GP shared this advice on his new podcast, “No Appointment Necessary,” alongside co-host Cherry Healey. Colds are more common during the autumn and winter months in the UK, with around 80% occurring during the cold and flu season.
During this period, people often stay indoors due to the colder weather, facilitating the spread of viruses. Cold symptoms include a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, hoarse voice, and fatigue. Rhinovirus is a common cold-causing virus that thrives in cold, dry air, impacting nasal passages and immune function due to reduced sunlight exposure.
While there is no cure for the common cold, rest, hydration, and symptom relief are recommended. Dr Khan suggests zinc supplements over vitamin C, as zinc has shown more evidence in reducing cold duration. Zinc supplements are available at health retailers like Holland and Barrett, Superdrug, and Boots, with prices as low as 5p per pill.
Studies indicate that zinc supplements, particularly in lozenge form, may slightly reduce cold duration by 1 to 2 days when taken within 24 hours of symptom onset. Adults should aim for at least 75 mg of elemental zinc daily, preferably through zinc acetate or zinc gluconate lozenges. It’s essential to consult a healthcare provider before starting any supplements, especially for individuals on specific medications or with certain health conditions.
Overall, zinc supplementation may help alleviate cold symptoms and potentially shorten illness duration, but it’s crucial to seek professional advice before incorporating it into your routine.
