Germany to Close Russian Consulate Amid Drone Attack Accusations

Must read

Germany has accused Russia of being behind a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month and will close a Russian consulate in response. The drone, carrying explosives, was discovered near a Ukrainian plane on August 4 but was safely defused. German officials view this incident as a serious escalation of danger.

Western officials have long accused Moscow of engaging in disruptive activities across Europe to undermine support for Ukraine and destabilize European countries. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the components and configuration of the drone used in the Leipzig incident were consistent with Russian hybrid operations seen in Ukraine. While the level of technical expertise involved was high, the execution seemed to be carried out by lower-level operatives.

Authorities believe that individuals acting on behalf of Russian state entities were involved in the attempted attack. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that Russia’s actions have damaged the bilateral relationship significantly. As a response, Germany will close the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.

Germany is planning to propose additional Russian individuals for EU sanctions related to hybrid attacks and increase scrutiny on Russian travelers. The country also aims to target tankers suspected of violating international sanctions by transporting Russian oil. The Russian ambassador has been summoned to Germany’s Foreign Ministry.

Russian officials have denied involvement in the drone attack, calling the accusations a pretext for escalating tensions. Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed the allegations, suggesting they were fabricated to divert attention from domestic issues. Despite these denials, Western security officials have linked numerous acts of sabotage and malign activities in Europe to Russia since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

European allies, including NATO, have expressed solidarity with Germany following the Leipzig incident. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have affirmed their support for Germany and condemned Russia’s actions. The situation underscores the ongoing tensions between Russia and Western nations, with fears of further escalations and conflicts in the region.
