“Grandfather’s Brutal Hammer Attack Shocks Community”

Must read

Derek Martin, a 67-year-old grandfather, committed a heinous act by fatally attacking his stepdaughter, Chloe Bashford, 30, with a hammer in her home. He then proceeded to stab her eight times and later killed her husband, Josh, 33, by stabbing and strangling him. The brutal incident occurred after an argument over money, during which Martin lost control and resorted to violence.

Following the murders, Martin attempted to conceal the crime by cleaning up the scene before nonchalantly picking up the couple’s four children from school. He took the children out for a meal before dropping them off at their grandmother’s house and surrendering himself to the authorities.

Although Martin confessed to the killings, he denied the murder charges, citing a psychiatric condition as a defense. However, after more than two years, he was found guilty of both murders and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 29 years.

Prior to the tragic events, Martin had a history of depression and suicide attempts, and had stopped taking his medication, leading to sleep deprivation. Despite having a past relationship with Chloe’s mother, Elaine Sturges, and assisting the family with various tasks, Martin’s actions took a devastating turn, leaving a profound impact on the victims’ loved ones.

Elaine Sturges, now caring for the orphaned children, expressed the irreparable loss caused by the tragedy. The couple’s eldest son, Brooklynn Bashford, shared heartfelt tributes to his parents, highlighting the profound grief and trauma experienced by the family. Martin’s chilling confession at the police station sealed the tragic events, leaving a lasting scar on all involved.
