Trouble is stirring at the Capitol as the highly anticipated Hunger Games stage show faces criticism from fans following its initial preview on Monday. Fans have labeled the show a “shambles.”
The on-stage adaptation of Suzanne Collin’s well-known young adult series debuted at London’s specially constructed Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre on October 20th. The production stars John Malkovich as the menacing President Snow and Mia Carragher as Katniss Everdeen.
Despite high expectations for the live interpretation of the popular series, many fans were left dissatisfied due to various issues, including significant delays. Footage circulated on TikTok depicted audience members queuing outside the theater at 7:29 pm, just a minute before the scheduled start time, with reports indicating that the show began an hour behind schedule. Some attendees lamented that the three-hour runtime, coupled with an interval, resulted in them not exiting the venue until 11:45 pm.
Despite the chaos, some fans found enjoyment in the show. One individual shared, “Had to leave The Hunger Games early, was actually enjoying it despite the shambles of getting into the venue.” Another fan commented, “Hunger Games on stage view from district 11 row A. Really good despite being called restricted view. The venue and organization was messy but the play itself was amazing.”
However, fans’ disappointment extended beyond the extended wait times. Disability advocate Sophie-Jayne Butler disclosed that she departed the theater before the show commenced and requested a refund for her ticket due to the lack of accessibility in her seating area. She highlighted in a TikTok video that her view of the stage was obstructed by a metal rail, rendering it impossible for her to see anything.
Sophie attempted to secure alternative seating at the box office but was informed that it was not feasible. She expressed her dismay, saying, “I’m so disappointed, I’ve looked forward to this for so many months. I don’t get how in 2025 you still have accessibility problems like this.”
