A judge has sentenced a “narcissistic predator” to nearly 15 years in prison for the rape of a 16-year-old girl, whose testimony from beyond the grave played a crucial role in bringing him to justice. Kristian Franks, 35, was described as a danger to all women by the judge who presided over the case.
Despite not being alive to witness Franks facing consequences for his heinous actions, Leah Bedford’s bravery in speaking out against him led to his downfall and the removal of a dangerous criminal from the streets. Franks, who displayed a lack of remorse by smirking during court proceedings and wearing a provocative T-shirt, was implicated in the rape of Leah, who tragically drowned shortly after reporting the assault.
Although the case did not go to trial due to Leah’s untimely death, North Yorkshire police, armed with her detailed account, revisited a previous complaint against Franks from 2017. Another woman, who initially withdrew her complaint due to threats, decided to pursue the case after learning of Leah’s ordeal. Franks was eventually convicted of rape by a jury after a swift deliberation.
Following Franks’ sentencing, Leah’s father, Paul Bedford, expressed pride in his daughter’s courage to report the crime, emphasizing the importance of holding offenders like Franks accountable. The judge highlighted Franks’ predatory behavior and disregard for consent, deeming him a serious risk to women. Franks received a lengthy prison term of 14 years and nine months, with the possibility of release after serving eight years and nine months, followed by a six-year probation period.
The court heard that Franks committed the rape in 2017, following his victim in his van and assaulting her after offering assistance with her phone. His actions were condemned as predatory and dangerous, prompting the judge to impose an extended sentence due to the risk he poses to women. Despite attempts to downplay his threat level, even Franks’ own barrister acknowledged the danger he poses to society.
Leah’s family and supporters paid tribute to her memory and the bravery of Franks’ victims, highlighting the enduring impact of sexual violence on survivors.
