Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has refuted claims made by former US President Donald Trump that the BBC is “100% fake news” following a dispute over an edited Panorama documentary.
The BBC is anticipated to address the issue on Monday, with Nandy expressing her unwavering support for the leadership of the corporation.
The controversy revolves around edited clips from Trump’s speech on January 6, 2021, the day of the Capitol attack by his supporters. These clips were aired in October as part of a Panorama program.
Trump’s press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, criticized the BBC, labeling them as “total fake news.” However, Nandy dismissed these allegations, emphasizing the importance of the BBC’s existence.
Nandy acknowledged the seriousness of the accusations and stated that she has held the BBC accountable for falling short of editorial standards. She highlighted ongoing discussions with the corporation regarding various issues, including claims of systemic bias in reporting.
