“Octopus Energy’s Smart Tip: Air-Dry Laundry to Cut Winter Bills”

Must read

Households in the UK are set to experience increased energy expenses this winter following a 2% rise in the price cap by Ofgem starting October 1. Nonetheless, Octopus Energy suggests several approaches to potentially lower these bills, including a simple adjustment to your laundry routine.

Instead of using a tumble dryer, Octopus Energy recommends utilizing a washing line or clothes horse to dry your laundry. Tumble dryers, especially older models with lower efficiency ratings, can significantly consume energy.

According to an online blog on ‘energy-saving tips’ by Octopus Energy, switching from a tumble dryer to air-drying clothes could save around £50 a year, as per the Energy Savings Trust. It is advised to avoid drying clothes on radiators, as this can strain your boiler.

Octopus Energy’s advice aligns with the guidance from the UK’s Energy Saving Trust, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting energy efficiency and cost savings. Apart from avoiding tumble dryers, the Trust also suggests reducing the wash temperature of your laundry to save on expenses.

Lowering wash temperatures, such as using 30 degrees instead of higher temperatures, can significantly reduce energy usage. The European Union’s Ecodesign initiative has even made a 20-degree wash compulsory on new machine models since 2013, emphasizing the benefits of lower temperatures for energy efficiency.

Consumer experts at Which? have stated that washing clothes at 30 degrees instead of 40 degrees can make laundry approximately 38% cheaper. They recommend efficient use of appliances like washer dryers and condenser tumble dryers to save on costs.

To maintain peak efficiency of your washing machine, Natalie Hitchins, the Home Products and Service Editor at Which?, emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance and cleaning. Cleaning the detergent tray every two to three months and running a hot drum cleaning wash can ensure optimal performance and keep your clothes fresh.
