“Premature Baby Dies Due to Mother’s Cocaine Use”

Must read

A tragic incident unfolded as a premature baby boy passed away shortly after birth due to his mother’s cocaine use during pregnancy, according to an inquest.

The newborn arrived approximately 16 weeks early, at 24 weeks’ gestation, at his mother’s residence in Builth Wells, Pwys, mid Wales. Despite prompt paramedic response, the baby’s condition did not improve, leading to his unfortunate death at Prince Charles Hospital in Methyr Tydfil.

During the hearing at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that the baby’s mother had tested positive for cocaine use while pregnant and had limited antenatal engagement. The coroner, Rachel Knight, stated that the unexpected delivery prompted emergency services to act swiftly, but the baby could not be saved.

The coroner concluded that the mother’s positive cocaine test and lack of antenatal involvement were key factors. Post-mortem examinations showed that the mother had an amniotic fluid infection, with uncertainties on how each factor contributed to the premature birth and subsequent death of the baby.

The official cause of death was determined as prematurity, with additional factors of amniotic fluid infection and antenatal cocaine exposure.
