The El Niño weather pattern is projected to strengthen through 2027 and could potentially become the most intense on record, increasing the likelihood of severe weather events in the coming year, according to the World Meteorological Organization. Celeste Saulo, the Secretary-General of the WMO, stated that if the current trend continues, this El Niño could surpass any seen since monitoring began, indicating unprecedented levels of intensity.

The WMO announced a nearly 100% probability that El Niño will persist until February 2027, fueled by unusually warm temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. This level of certainty is a first for the organization. A powerful El Niño can significantly alter global rainfall and temperature patterns, contributing to extreme weather events such as typhoons.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the remarkable growth of El Niño, stating that scientific evidence confirms the planet is entering uncharted territory with rising temperatures. El Niño, characterized by elevated sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific due to weakened trade winds, occurs naturally every two to seven years and typically lasts up to a year, leading to intense rainfall and droughts across Latin America.

The current El Niño has already impacted tropical regions, causing a severe food crisis in Central America’s Dry Corridor. The WMO forecasts that El Niño will peak later this year but will continue to affect global temperatures into 2027. Saulo highlighted the WMO’s commitment to enhancing preparedness and early warning systems in anticipation of these effects.

The organization aims to collaborate closely with UN partners and the humanitarian sector to provide vital climate information for disaster management and climate-sensitive industries like agriculture, health, energy, and water resources. The implications of a potent El Niño are significant, requiring proactive measures to mitigate potential risks and support affected regions.
