The first preview for Scream 7 has unveiled a heartfelt tribute to a significant character who met their end in the original 1996 horror classic.
The popular horror satire introduced viewers to Neve Campbell’s Sydney Prescott, whose group of high school friends is haunted by a masked assailant known as Ghostface.
In the original film, the identity of the first Ghostface is revealed to be Sydney’s boyfriend, Billy Loomis (portrayed by Skeet Ulrich), with assistance from his unstable companion, Stu Macher (played by Matthew Lillard).
Among the early victims is sadly Sydney’s closest friend, Tatum Riley (depicted by Rose McGowan), who meets a gruesome fate under a garage door.
Three decades after the initial movie hit theaters, a new killer has adopted the Ghostface persona to hunt Sydney and journalist Gale Weathers (played by Courteney Cox).
The fresh trailer for Scream 7 discloses that Ghostface is now targeting Sydney’s daughter, played by Isabel May and named Tatum after McGowan’s character from the first installment.
Devoted followers of the Scream series quickly noticed the poignant nod and shared their excitement on social media platforms.
One user expressed, “Sydney named her daughter after Tatum!!!! The writers paying homage to Rose McGowan’s character did something to my nostalgia heart.”
Another viewer reacted positively, saying, “Actually looks good and I quite enjoy Sydney naming her daughter Tatum. Whooooo.”
A third exclaimed, “The scream 7 trailer.. the nostalgia got me bro. sidney named her kid tatum. TATUM.”
And another fan commented, “so far the only thing i love about the scream 7 trailer is that sid named her daughter after tatum.”
Despite the positive reception of the new trailer, Scream 7 has stirred controversy following the removal of Melissa Barrera, a lead from the previous sequels, due to comments regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Her co-star Jenna Ortega also exited the project quietly, which some interpret as a gesture of support.
Certain fans have threatened to boycott the upcoming Scream film in solidarity with Barrera’s stance.
One user stated, “as a lifelong fan of the scream franchise, i can never support them again after what they did to melissa barrera. She was one of the first people in hollywood to speak up against the genocide and the producers of this film tried to ruin her for it. Boycott.”
Scream 7 is scheduled to premiere in UK cinemas on February 27, 2026.
