Robson Green, known for his role in the TV series “Grantchester,” recently got his first tattoo at the age of 60. The actor decided to get inked after embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage in northern Spain for a new television program. Walking over 90 miles along the renowned Camino de Santiago, many pilgrims opt to get a tattoo as a lasting memento of their journey.
Upon reaching his destination, Robson, best known for his role in “Soldier, Soldier,” impulsively decided to get a tattoo of a scallop shell on his upper arm. Reflecting on his experience, he shared that the pilgrimage had a profound impact on him, both externally and internally.
Fascinated by the Camino de Santiago, Robson features his journey in the upcoming TV series “The World’s Most Amazing Walks,” where he explores various treks across the UK and Europe. Among the trails, his favorite was the one in Spain, tracing back to the 9th century when the remains of St. James were discovered in Santiago de Compostella.
While the popular Camino Frances covers a 500-mile stretch lasting six weeks, Robson chose a shorter 90-mile route from O Cebreiro to Santiago. During the six-day trek, he stayed at hostels that serve as shelters for the numerous walkers passing through annually.
Robson was captivated by the symbols along the route, particularly the scallop shell, which he chose for his tattoo. The shell symbolizes the historic tradition of pilgrims collecting shells from the Galician coastline as proof of their journey to Santiago.
Returning to the UK to film the final season of “Grantchester,” Robson initially kept his tattoo hidden. However, it was eventually revealed during a scene where his shoulder was exposed, catching the attention of a guest actor who recognized the Camino symbol.
Expressing his emotional connection to the pilgrimage, Robson shared his plans to return to the Camino without the cameras. “Robson Green: The World’s Most Amazing Walks” premieres on U and U&Yesterday on October 27 at 8pm.
