“U.S. Warns Canada Against Retaliation Amid Tariff Threat”

Must read

Donald Trump’s trade representative stated that the U.S. will not tolerate any form of retaliation from Canada if the president proceeds with his recent tariff warning. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that the administration’s focus is safeguarding domestic supply chains rather than engaging in a trade war, asserting a global approach to the issue. Greer emphasized that any country retaliating against the U.S. would face consequences.

Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s threat to impose a substantial 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products effective August 19. Greer described the ongoing talks with Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as positive and productive.

Industry insiders familiar with the negotiations revealed that Canada views the August 19 deadline as critical, indicating that talks could halt if the tariffs are implemented. Greer emphasized that the primary goal is to execute President Trump’s trade policy effectively, underlining the importance of prioritizing America’s interests.

In response to the escalating tensions, Canada is open to addressing concerns raised by the U.S., including provincial alcohol bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs. However, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal, cautioning against compromising on dairy negotiations.

Greer highlighted several trade issues between the U.S. and Canada, particularly referencing alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs. Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, defended Canada’s position, stating that retaliatory measures were in response to unfair and illegal actions imposed by the U.S., rejecting the notion of “might is right” in international trade relations.
