A Vancouver music teacher has been permanently barred from teaching after admitting to sexually assaulting a student. Robert Kyle Ledingham will not be permitted to seek re-certification in British Columbia following his guilty plea to a single sexual assault charge in May 2024, as outlined in a consent agreement from the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.
Ledingham, a certified teacher since May 2008, faced initial charges of two counts of sexual exploitation and one count of sexual assault in September 2020. The misconduct involved a student who volunteered at a high school in the Vancouver School District, where Ledingham taught band, between April and June 2019. The student’s identity remains protected by a court-ordered publication ban and attended a different high school than Ledingham’s teaching location.
After pleading guilty to one sexual assault charge in May 2024, Ledingham received a 15-month conditional sentence order, which included a provision prohibiting him from seeking employment involving authority over minors. The Vancouver School District terminated his employment in November 2024. In the agreement, Ledingham acknowledged his actions as professional misconduct and agreed to a lifetime ban on applying for a teaching certificate.
