After the Michael Donovan Public Library in the west end of St. John’s closed due to the end of its rental agreement at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago, efforts to secure a new location have faced challenges. A recent tender issued by the provincial government to find a new home for the library did not receive any submissions.
Josh Smee, the vice-chair of the non-profit advisory board Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, expressed frustration and disappointment at the lack of progress. Despite the library’s modest size, it was a beloved spot for patrons. Smee emphasized the community’s desire to see the library reopen in the west end and acknowledged the impact of the delay in the process.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is currently consulting with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next steps. Janelle Simms, a department spokesperson, assured that the intention is for the library to remain in the west end of St. John’s.
Smee urged landlords in the west end to participate in the process and highlighted the importance of finding a suitable location for the library. He remains hopeful for a successful outcome in the next round of the tender.
Library patron Juanette Anthony shared her experience of missing the Michael Donovan Public Library, particularly for its computer access. She expressed a desire for the library to reopen in the same area but in a larger space with enhanced resources.
The community’s longing for the library’s return underscores the significance of this issue. With ongoing efforts to secure a new home, the hope remains to restore this essential community resource in the west end of St. John’s.
