The union representing WestJet’s cabin crew has disclosed the specifics of the tentative agreement reached with the Calgary-based airline following a one-day strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced that the deal encompasses an over 18% salary increase spread over three years, along with a novel “duty period premium” to compensate for ground-related tasks. Added benefits include extended time off, enhanced food and uniform allowances, and other provisions.
Flight operations for WestJet were halted across a significant part of Canada during the long holiday weekend as the deadline for a strike by 4,400 flight attendants approached. The strike commenced early Sunday, leading to disruptions in services. However, a tentative agreement was reached between the airline and the union on Monday, leading to a gradual return to normal operations for WestJet.
The cabin crew members are scheduled to vote on the agreement in the upcoming weeks to finalize the terms and conditions.
