WestJet, the second-largest airline in Canada, is making preparations to gradually reduce its operations in anticipation of a potential strike by its flight attendants or a lockout. However, this plan to wind down operations does not signify a definite move towards a labor dispute, as discussions between the union and the company are ongoing.
According to a communication by WestJet’s vice-president of inflight operations, Robert Antoniuk, the agreement to halt operations is a precautionary measure in case negotiations between the CUPE WestJet Component and the company do not succeed. The union has been clear in stating their desire for a fair deal without resorting to a strike.
Federal mediators are actively engaged in the negotiations, with Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon expressing optimism about reaching a mutually acceptable agreement. Aviation expert John Gradek emphasized the necessity for airlines like WestJet to have contingency plans in place to avoid disruptions in case of a labor dispute.
Either the company or the union must provide a 72-hour notice before a strike or lockout, potentially impacting flights from July 30 onwards. WestJet has not yet announced any flight cancellations related to the labor dispute but has offered flexibility to passengers with waived cancellation or change fees within a specific timeframe.
The unionized flight attendants, represented by CUPE WestJet Component, are considering a strike following a significant vote in favor. Disagreements over compensation for all hours worked remain a key issue in the negotiations. WestJet’s pay system for flight attendants, based on credit hours, is a point of contention, with the union claiming that a significant portion of their work goes uncompensated.
While WestJet has defended its pay model, stating that flight attendants are compensated for all hours worked, the matter of unpaid work remains unresolved. This unresolved issue has raised concerns among the union members, echoing past disputes in the aviation industry. WestJet faced a labor dispute in 2024 involving unionized mechanics, impacting travel plans for numerous passengers.
