“Worker Rescued from Rubble in Rome Tower Collapse”

Must read

A worker was successfully rescued after being trapped beneath the debris of a historic tower in Rome. The incident occurred during renovation work on the Torre dei Conti close to the Colosseum, where the structure partially collapsed, leaving the worker stuck. Emergency responders carefully extracted him using an aerial ladder and a stretcher, transferring him to an ambulance. Although his condition was not immediately disclosed, Rome’s firefighters’ chief commander mentioned that the worker was conscious.

Rescue efforts were challenging as parts of the building kept collapsing each time a section of the worker was freed. Multiple attempts were made, including using a drone and large tubes to clear rubble from the second-floor window. The collapse affected the tower’s central buttress and damaged the stairwell and roof, according to cultural heritage officials.

Rome’s Mayor highlighted the delicate nature of the operation due to the risk of further collapses. Three other workers were safely rescued, while one worker suffered critical injuries and was hospitalized. The tower, constructed in the 13th century, has been undergoing extensive restoration work, including the installation of modern systems and a new museum exhibit showcasing the Roman Imperial Forum’s latest developments.

Prior to the recent renovation phase, structural assessments confirmed the building’s stability for the ongoing work. Italian authorities are investigating potential charges related to negligence in the incident. Witnesses, including a visiting student, described the tense atmosphere during the rescue operation.

Italian Prime Minister expressed hope for a positive outcome for the injured worker and extended gratitude to the emergency responders for their dedicated efforts in managing the complex situation.
