In response to the Yukon’s largest union being put under trusteeship, representatives from the parent union hosted a virtual town hall to clarify the situation and address concerns. Josée-Anne Spirito and Chris Aylward, appointed as the new trustee and administrator, both have ties to the Yukon Employees’ Union’s parent organization, the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
The Public Service Alliance assumed control of the Yukon Employees’ Union last week, suspending the union’s bylaws and removing the president, vice-president, and directors from their positions. Spirito emphasized that the decision to place the union under trusteeship was not taken lightly and was not related to financial mismanagement or any individual’s actions.
Aylward, whose salary is funded by YEU, explained that his role is supported by PSAC. Despite efforts to make progress, Aylward faced obstacles and resistance from executive members, leading to a standstill in operations. He clarified that the dysfunction within the union necessitated the recommendation for trusteeship.
While some members questioned the necessity of the trusteeship, others like Jessica McIntyre defended the former executive members’ actions, stating that asking questions during the administration was not inappropriate behavior.
The upcoming convention to elect new leadership in October faces challenges as many locals have not nominated delegates, leaving over 50 vacant seats. Spirito highlighted the importance of ensuring membership representation and hinted at a potential postponement of the event.
Spirito assured members that town hall meetings will be a regular feature throughout the trusteeship to keep members informed and provide a platform for inquiries. She emphasized that bargaining for improved deals for YEU members remains a top priority and will not be affected by the trusteeship.
