“93-Year-Old Driver Escapes Jail After Severe Accident”

Must read

A 93-year-old driver managed to escape imprisonment after causing a severe accident by running a red light and striking a six-year-old boy, resulting in lasting brain damage. Phyllis Grassi failed to notice the traffic light change while driving her silver Smart Fortwo toward a pedestrian crossing. The impact of the collision sent the young boy flying through the air, landing near a telegraph pole with significant head injuries.

The child, who underwent brain surgery and spent six weeks in a coma, suffered life-altering consequences including partial loss of sight, deafness in one ear, mobility issues, and cognitive impairments following the incident on Blandford Road in Corfe Mullen, Dorset. Grassi, a mother-of-five, admitted guilt to causing serious injury due to careless driving and received a suspended 26-week prison sentence at Poole Magistrates’ Court considering her age and health conditions.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the boy had believed it was safe to cross the road as the pedestrian light signaled green, but his father noticed Grassi’s vehicle not stopping. The father’s desperate attempt to catch his son as he was struck from behind by the car resulted in a tragic turn of events. The family expressed the profound impact of the incident on their lives, emphasizing the boy’s drastic lifestyle changes post-accident.

Grassi, who had surrendered her driving license promptly after the incident, expressed deep remorse for the momentary lapse of concentration that led to the life-altering collision. Despite causing irreversible harm to the child, Grassi was spared immediate imprisonment due to her remorse and health issues. The sentencing judge acknowledged the severity of the boy’s injuries and trauma inflicted on the family, leading to a five-year driving ban and additional financial penalties imposed on Grassi.
