“Viral Video Urges Proper Disposal of Batteries to Prevent Hazards”

Must read

Millions of individuals utilize batteries daily to operate various devices. While many gadgets now come equipped with rechargeable batteries, there is still a need for traditional alkaline batteries in items like TV remotes, gaming controllers, automatic air fresheners, and electronic children’s toys.

Surprisingly, it is imperative to never dispose of batteries in regular household waste or recycling bins. The general public is largely unaware that all batteries and electrical devices should not be thrown away once they stop functioning, as they can present significant hazards to both individuals and the environment.

In a viral Instagram video by Alexandra Fisher, she emphasized the risks of placing batteries in regular trash bins, even if they are fully depleted. Drawing from her experience as an emergency medical technician at a U.S. fire department for a decade, she highlighted the potential for batteries to ignite fires due to residual charges.

To mitigate risks while storing dead batteries before recycling, Fisher recommended covering the ends of each battery with tape to prevent accidental connections with other batteries. Beyond fire hazards, batteries contain harmful chemicals that can contaminate the environment if left to decompose in landfills.

In the U.S., except for California, it is legal to dispose of alkaline batteries in household waste, whereas lithium batteries must be taken to specialized disposal facilities. Conversely, in the UK, regular waste disposal of batteries is prohibited, with disposal options available at local supermarkets and larger retail stores.

Furthermore, it is advised to tape the ends of lithium batteries specifically to reduce the likelihood of fire incidents. Fisher’s advice garnered appreciation from online users who were unaware of the fire risks associated with dead batteries, prompting comments expressing surprise and gratitude for the enlightening information.
