Following the Government shutdown, more than 800 flights have been canceled in the US as federal officials directed 40 major airports to decrease their operations.
Numerous travelers are now experiencing disruptions, stuck in lengthy lines and facing significant delays. This action, affecting only domestic flights, was initiated due to reports of fatigue from air traffic controllers, as stated by the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Approximately 1.4 million federal workers, including air traffic controllers and park wardens, are either working unpaid or are on mandatory leave because of the lack of a funding budget approved by the US Congress.
Major airports such as those in Chicago, Atlanta, New York, and Washington DC are among the locations affected by the reduced services.
US Vice President JD Vance has cautioned that the nation is facing an “aviation emergency” amidst the flight cancellations.
He stated, “The shutdown has escalated from a farce to a tragedy, and the repercussions of this national emergency are on every senator and congressman who refuses to reopen the government.”
The reduction in flights will be phased in, starting with a 4% decrease in domestic flights on Friday. The percentage will increase to 6% by November 11, then to 8% by November 13, ultimately reaching a full 10% decrease by November 14.
