Must read

A father in Offaly, Ireland, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping and threatening to harm his daughter. The man, aged 51, was found guilty of sexually and physically abusing his daughter from the ages of five to 13, facing charges of rape and oral rape between 2012 and 2020. The abuse began after the girl’s parents separated, with the assaults occurring during her visits to his home.

The daughter, now 19, testified in court about the traumatic experiences she endured, including being repeatedly raped and physically abused by her father. She revealed that the abuse started when she was young and continued over several occasions, with the man threatening her with harm if she spoke out.

Despite the ongoing abuse, the girl eventually confided in a friend and later her mother, leading to the man’s arrest in 2023. In her victim impact statement, she expressed how the abuse had taken a toll on her mental health, driving her to contemplate suicide. She also revealed that she kept the abuse secret to protect her family, especially her younger sister.

The court sentenced the man to 12 years in prison, with an additional three years of supervision by Ireland’s Probation Service upon release. He is prohibited from contacting his daughters or their mother. The man denied any wrongdoing and was supported by his partner and other family members during the trial.

The daughter, in a courageous statement, emphasized that despite the trauma inflicted by her father, she remains a kind and loving person. She highlighted the lifelong impact of the abuse and the need for emotional support. The court proceedings concluded with Mr. Justice Paul McDermott delivering the sentence, acknowledging the severity of the crimes committed.
