Sir Sadiq Khan has expressed satisfaction at a significant setback for Donald Trump as Democrat Zohran Mamdani emerged victorious in New York’s mayoral race.
President Trump had supported former governor Andrew Cuomo, labeling Mamdani a “communist” and threatening to cut federal funding to New York if Mamdani won. Nevertheless, Mamdani prevailed over Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to become the city’s first Muslim mayor of South Asian descent.
Sir Sadiq praised Mamdani’s victory, noting that he will be New York’s youngest mayor in over a century when he assumes office on January 1, hailing it as a “historic campaign.”
In a message, Sir Sadiq highlighted the choice New Yorkers faced between hope and fear, drawing parallels to London’s similar choice where hope emerged victorious.
The London mayor’s endorsement of Mamdani follows a longstanding feud with Trump that began in 2015 when Trump proposed a ban on Muslims entering the US, which Khan strongly opposed.
During Trump’s UK visit, he criticized Khan as one of the worst mayors globally and allegedly requested that Khan not attend certain events. Trump also falsely claimed that Khan sought to impose Sharia law in London, prompting Khan to denounce Trump as racist, sexist, and Islamophobic.
Mamdani, in his victory speech, challenged Trump to “turn the volume up” to hear the cheers of his supporters, emphasizing that New York will remain a city of immigrants, built and led by immigrants.
The city’s Board of Elections reported record voter turnout, with over two million ballots cast. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, when asked about Mamdani’s win, mentioned her limited focus on American politics.
