Jakob Ingebrigtsen made a triumphant return from injury by securing his fourth consecutive 5,000-meter title at the European championships held in Birmingham, England. The Norwegian, a two-time Olympic champion, had been sidelined following surgery earlier this year to address issues with scar tissue around his left Achilles tendon.
During the race, Ingebrigtsen displayed impressive speed, initially positioned in third place before unleashing a powerful surge in the final 50 meters to overtake Florian Bremm of Germany, ultimately finishing in a time of 13 minutes and 15.29 seconds. Bremm claimed second place, with France’s Etienne Daguinos following closely behind.
Reflecting on his victory, Ingebrigtsen expressed his disbelief at reclaiming the European title after such a challenging period. He credited his renewed sense of self and determination, emphasizing the doubts he had overcome leading up to the race.
Ingebrigtsen’s competitors lauded his exceptional talent, with Daguinos hailing him as a “legend of our sport” and Bremm acknowledging Ingebrigtsen’s superior speed even post-injury.
Despite his remarkable performance, Ingebrigtsen opted not to compete in the 1,500 meters at the championships. His recent struggles with Achilles issues had impacted his results at the previous world championships, where he faced setbacks in both the 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters events.
This latest European victory marked Ingebrigtsen’s seventh individual gold at the continental level, solidifying his status as the most successful male athlete in the history of the European championships.
In a separate event, Amy Hunt of Britain clinched the women’s 100 meters title with a time of 11 seconds, narrowly beating out her competitors from Poland and Belgium. Meanwhile, Netherlands’ Jessica Schilder secured her third consecutive shot put gold, showcasing her dominance in the field.
Schilder, a reigning world champion, expressed her satisfaction at overcoming challenges, including an injury, to achieve success once more. Her remarkable achievements included surpassing the 21-meter mark, highlighting her exceptional prowess in the shot put discipline.
The championships also saw Leonardo Fabbri defend his men’s shot put title, further adding to the impressive performances on display in Birmingham.
