“Quebec Demands Answers After Tragic Death of 4-Year-Old”

Must read

Quebec officials are expressing anger following the passing of a four-year-old child in the Nunavik community of Ivujivik amid allegations that the youngster was turned away from receiving medical care. In a press release issued on Thursday, Québec Solidaire representative Sol Zanetti is demanding explanations regarding the demise of Jusi Padlayat, who reportedly passed away on August 3 after being taken to the local clinic by his parents multiple times for stomach discomfort but allegedly did not receive treatment.

According to an interview with La Presse, Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, revealed that the family’s worries were dismissed by medical personnel who advised them to administer Advil or Tylenol to the child. Mangiuk disclosed to La Presse that Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1 and was first taken to the local nursing station before being transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital, where he later succumbed.

Zanetti condemned the act of leaving a child in agony for days as unacceptable, highlighting concerns of possible negligence. He urged for a thorough investigation into Padlayat’s passing by the Commissioner of Children’s Rights and Welfare. The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) has also called for enhancements in healthcare services in northern regions, proposing increased telemedicine options as a viable solution to address such issues.

The tragic incident has reignited discussions on the need for improved healthcare access for Indigenous communities, with the Joyce’s Principle Office emphasizing the significance of respect and genuine care in service delivery. The office drew parallels to the case of Joyce Echaquan, underscoring the importance of not trivializing the concerns of families in critical situations.

Both the Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services have committed to conducting internal and external reviews in response to the incident. The Quebec coroners office has initiated an investigation into the matter, while the Montreal Children’s Hospital has refrained from commenting on specific cases, citing confidentiality constraints.
