Must read

Miyu Yamashita had a triumphant debut in Canada, securing victory at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton. The 25-year-old Japanese golfer clinched her fourth LPGA Tour win and second for the year with a stellar performance at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Yamashita carded a remarkable 4-under-par 66 in the final round, finishing the $2.75 million US tournament at 23 under.

Maintaining a comfortable lead of six strokes after three rounds, Yamashita secured a nine-stroke victory over compatriot Yuri Yoshida, who finished at 14 under. Expressing her joy at the win, Yamashita shared, “I’m thrilled to emerge victorious in Canada. The support from the fans was incredible, and it was a pleasure to compete this week.”

Standing at four feet and eleven inches, Yamashita previously claimed victory at the Meijer LPGA Classic in Michigan in June. She became the fastest Japanese player to reach four LPGA wins, with her total score of 257 in Edmonton tying the all-time low on the LPGA Tour.

In another notable performance, Vancouver’s Anna Huang finished as the top Canadian, posting a 5-under 65 to reach 12 under and secure a tie for fourth place. Calgary’s Aphrodite Deng finished tied for seventh at 11 under, also earning the title of low amateur for the second consecutive year.

Two-time champion Brooke Henderson from Smiths Falls, Ont., concluded the tournament at 7 under, tied for 13th. Reflecting on the event, Henderson commented, “It’s fantastic to see so many Canadians excelling. The future looks promising, and I’m thrilled to be part of this success.”

Huang, aged 17, secured her fourth European Tour win in early August, becoming the youngest to achieve this feat. She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd, stating, “Playing in Canada was a special experience. I had a great time and learned valuable lessons.”

Both Huang and Deng’s top-10 finishes grant them entry into the LPGA’s FM Championship at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. Huang emphasized the importance of simplicity in golf, stating, “Playing straightforward golf yields the best results, even if it may seem unexciting.”

World No. 1 Nelly Korda of the United States finished the tournament at 1 under, while Yamashita’s outstanding performance set a high standard that proved challenging for Henderson and other competitors to match.

Henderson, with 14 tour wins to her name, faced difficulties navigating the rough terrain, impacting her performance. Despite this, she remains optimistic about her future prospects, highlighting her strong ball striking and determination to improve.

Additionally, Michelle Xing, an 18-year-old amateur, showcased her talent by finishing at 3 under, while other Canadian participants concluded their rounds with varying results. The upcoming 2027 CPKC Women’s Open is set to take place at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club in Gatineau, Que.
