Must read

The BBC has announced intentions to pay tribute to Prunella Scales, known for her role in Fawlty Towers, following her recent passing at the age of 93. The network will air an episode of the show tonight on BBC One at 8pm as a gesture of respect. The chosen episode, “The Builders,” originally aired on September 26, 1975.

Prunella Scales, who played Sybil in the iconic BBC comedy series, passed away peacefully at her home in London. Her family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement, mentioning that she had been watching Fawlty Towers the day before her passing. Scales, who was married to Timothy West for 61 years until his passing in November 2024, is survived by two sons, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Jon Petrie, the director of comedy at the BBC, expressed condolences, highlighting Scales’ immense talent and the joy she brought to audiences. Co-star John Cleese also shared his sadness at the news, praising Scales’ comedic prowess and remembering her fondly.

Fawlty Towers, which won a Bafta for best scripted comedy in 1976, marked 50 years since its debut this year. The stage production of Fawlty Towers paid tribute to Scales, with Mia Austen describing it as an honor to portray the character she made famous.

In addition to her television work, Scales had a successful career on stage and in radio. West End venues will dim their lights in her memory, and Downing Street extended sympathies to her family. Scales was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013, and she leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances and openness about her struggles with the disease.

Corinne Mills from the Alzheimer’s Society praised Scales for raising awareness about dementia and offered condolences to her loved ones, recognizing her as a true British icon. Scales’ contributions to the entertainment industry spanned various mediums, from stage to screen, leaving a lasting impact on audiences worldwide.
