Canada’s solitary remaining epishelf lake, characterized by freshwater atop saltwater, has vanished, along with the distinctive ecosystem it sustained, as per findings from a recent study by scientists. Jérémie Bonneau, the study’s primary author and an assistant professor at Laval University in Quebec City, expressed sorrow over the loss of the Milne Fiord epishelf lake on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, emphasizing its unique status as the last of its kind in Canada.

The abrupt disappearance of the lake, as Bonneau lamented, resulted in the eradication of all life forms inhabiting it. This event underscores how a warming climate is reshaping the Arctic region. While prior reports had outlined the demise of the lake, the newly published study in Scientific Reports delves into the mechanics of its disappearance, describing the irreversible loss as signaling a significant transition and the conclusion of a 4000-year era.

Epishelf lakes, formed by the accumulation of freshwater on top of saltwater due to natural barriers, are a rare phenomenon. The Milne Fiord lake, concealed beneath a layer of ice, had been accumulating freshwater for millennia, with a depth of 18 meters reported in 1983. Despite the lake’s unique ecosystem, including distinct freshwater and saltwater communities, the collapse of the Milne Ice Shelf in 2020 led to the lake’s sudden drainage, causing the immediate demise of its inhabitants.

The study also sheds light on the impact of the lake’s disappearance on the surrounding environment, revealing the interconnectedness of the ecosystem. With epishelf lakes now extinct in Canada, similar formations in Greenland and Antarctica may face a similar fate due to ongoing climate changes, as warned by researcher Andrew Hamilton. The loss of these extraordinary ecosystems underscores the irreversible changes occurring in our environment, emphasizing the urgency of conservation efforts.
