Avocados have become a popular choice for brunch enthusiasts due to their healthy fats content. However, their quick perishability is a common issue, especially given their dark exterior which makes it challenging to determine their ripeness before cutting into them. Often, slicing an avocado reveals a disappointing brown and mushy interior.
Typically, avocados have a short peak ripeness window of only a couple of days. Yet, there is a simple trick to extend their shelf life, especially if you store them in the fridge. Amy Cross, a food waste reduction expert from The Cross Legacy, shared this hack on YouTube.
To make your avocados last longer, give them a quick wash with a solution of water and white vinegar after purchasing them. Submerge the avocados in a bowl filled with water and a quarter cup of distilled white vinegar for two minutes. Then, ensure they are completely dry before refrigerating them, preferably in the crisper drawer alongside a lemon.
According to Amy, lemons and avocados complement each other and help in maintaining freshness. This method can reportedly keep avocados fresh for a month or more, making it a valuable tip for individuals looking to minimize food wastage.
