A 69-year-old grandmother who spent 12 years on death row in Bali for smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine has returned to the UK. Lindsay Sandiford, then 56, confessed to smuggling drugs into Indonesia in 2012 but asserted that she was coerced by a drug syndicate that threatened her family. She was sentenced to death by firing squad the following year and endured harsh conditions in prison until a humanitarian release deal was secured last month.
After a lengthy journey back, including a layover, Sandiford arrived at London Heathrow Airport with a government-funded £600 ticket, marking her first return to British soil in over ten years. She is eager to reunite with her family and receive urgent medical care following her release facilitated by the UK Government.
Reports indicate that Sandiford’s health has deteriorated significantly after spending over a decade in harsh prison conditions. She expressed her eagerness to go home and bid farewell to fellow inmates who had become like family to her before leaving prison.
Pastor Christine Buckingham, who recently visited Sandiford in Kerobokan jail, emphasized the urgency of getting Sandiford home for medical evaluation and to spend time with her family upon her return.
Sandiford, seen in a wheelchair, experienced freedom for the first time in 13 years, with 12 of those years spent on death row, after leaving Kerobokan jail in Bali. She shielded her face from photographers as she was escorted to Denpasar International Airport, where she boarded a Qatar Airways flight for her journey back to the UK.
Sources in Indonesia revealed that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper personally appealed to Indonesian authorities for Sandiford’s release. While Indonesian authorities suggest that she might face further incarceration upon her return to the UK, it remains unclear if Sandiford will be taken into custody, as the Foreign Office has not confirmed this. Indonesia’s Deputy Minister for Immigration and Correctional Coordination, I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, stated that she would remain in prison in England.
